Madinah hotel questions, answered

Hotels in the Central Area (Markaziyah) ring the mosque directly and are generally a 5–15 minute walk from one of its gates. Properties further out along King Faisal and Sultana roads are usually 20–30 minutes on foot, and most run a shuttle. Madinah is easier to walk than Makkah — the ground is flat and the courtyards are shaded — so a slightly cheaper hotel one ring out is a more comfortable trade here than it is in Makkah.
Yes. Entry to the Rawdah is booked in advance through the official Nusuk app or website, and you are given a specific time slot. The permit itself is free, but slots are limited and open a set number of days ahead, so it is worth booking as soon as your travel dates are confirmed. Men and women have separate visiting hours. Your hotel booking is not a permit and does not reserve a slot for you.
Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport (MED) is roughly 15 km from the Central Area — normally a 20–30 minute drive, longer at peak arrival times in Ramadan. Landing at Madinah rather than Jeddah saves you the long road leg between the two cities, which is why many pilgrims choose to start in Madinah and travel to Makkah afterwards.
From Madinah the miqat is Dhul Hulayfah, known locally as Abyar Ali, about 9 km south of the city on the road to Makkah. There is a large mosque there with changing and washing facilities, and coaches stop for pilgrims to change and make their intention. This is the same miqat regardless of which country you flew in from — it is set by where you depart from, not by your passport.
The main sites are all short drives from the Central Area: Quba Mosque, the first mosque built in Islam, is a few kilometres south; Mount Uhud and the martyrs’ cemetery lie to the north; and Masjid al-Qiblatain is to the west. Most hotels can arrange a half-day ziyarah tour covering all three. Al-Baqi cemetery is immediately beside Masjid an-Nabawi and opens after Fajr and Asr.
Most Madinah hotels check in from 3:00 PM and check out by 12:00 noon, and these times are enforced strictly in Ramadan when occupancy is at capacity. If you are arriving on an early morning flight, tell us when you book and we arrange early check-in with the hotel directly where a room is free, rather than leaving it to chance at the front desk.
